How Do I Know Which Credit Card Pays Me the Most?
There is only one honest way to know: multiply each card’s rewards rates against your actual monthly spending, subtract the annual fee, and compare the results. No list, review, or ranking can do that for you — because none of them know where your money goes.
Why “best card” lists cannot answer this
A ranked list has to pick one order for everyone. But the card that wins for a household spending $700 a month on groceries loses badly for a frequent flyer who eats out every night — and both lose to a different card for a student building credit. “Best” without “for your spending” is a marketing word, not a math result. This is the core problem that leaves roughly half of people carrying the wrong card.
The method: net annual value
The number that decides everything is simple to define: (what the card pays on your spending, category by category) minus (the annual fee). That is net annual value. A 6 percent grocery card with a $95 fee, a 2 percent flat card with no fee, and a travel card with a $550 fee and big credits can all be compared on one scale — dollars per year, on your numbers.
Doing it by hand takes an afternoon
For one card: list your monthly spending in each category, match each category to the card’s earn rates, mind the caps (a “6 percent on groceries” card usually caps the 6 percent at $6,000 a year), convert points to a realistic cash value, then subtract the fee. Now repeat for every card you are considering. It is not hard math — it is just a lot of it, and card terms change often enough that your spreadsheet starts rotting the day you finish it.
Or let the calculator do exactly that in 60 seconds
This entire method is what the MyCreditPerks calculator automates: enter what you spend on dining, groceries, travel, gas, and the rest, and every card in our system is ranked by net annual value on your numbers — caps, points values, and fees included, with the math shown for every result. Add your current card and it tells you your personal gap in dollars. Then use the compare tool to put your top contenders side by side. No login, no email, nothing stored.
